ISICSB - Iowa Statewide Interoperable Communications Board

NARROWBANDING

The Federal Communication Commission (FCC) has mandated that by December 31, 2012, "all VHF and UHF Public Safety and Industrial/Business land mobile radio (LMR) systems in the 150-174 MHz and 421-512 MHz bands" must migrate from 25 kHz channel bandwidth to 12.5 kHz or narrower technology.

According to the FCC, this Federal narrowbanding mandate "will ensure more efficient use of spectrum, relieve congestion, and result in increased channel availability for LMR systems."

The ISICSB has assembled several resources to assist agencies in understanding this Federally unfunded mandate, and complying with it by 12/31/2012, as contained in the following pages.

Of particular note, we have included the Iowa State Patrol Narrowbanding Schedule to assist agencies in coordinating their narrowbanding conversions, if they so desire.
